2025 Trustees Report: What it Means for Clients and Advisors
Published June 24, 2025
The latest Social Security Trustees Report projects the combined trust funds will be depleted by 2034, one year earlier than expected. This means that without legislative changes, only 81% of scheduled benefits will be payable at that time—77% for OASI alone. The report also confirms that the Social Security Fairness Act is now in effect, repealing the WEP and GPO, which has already triggered retroactive payments for many public sector retirees.
For NSSA® advisors, this is a defining moment. Clients are seeing headlines and feeling uncertain. Your guidance matters more than ever. Use this opportunity to:
-
Run benefit scenarios assuming partial payments starting in 2034.
-
Update plans for public sector clients who were previously penalized under WEP/GPO.
-
Communicate calm, clarity, and strategy—reminding clients that while reform is needed, the program remains fundamentally strong for the next 9+ years.
