Can a Disabled Spouse Qualify for a Spousal Benefit Boost While Receiving SSDI?

hey marc! spousal benefits Aug 30, 2024

Scenario is a married couple where the husband is working, and the wife, age 63, is unable to work and currently receiving $300/month from SSDI. Can the disabled spouse qualify for a spousal benefit from the husband’s PIA?

Assuming her husband begins his retirement benefit, the disabled spouse, she can receive a spousal benefit boost. The Spouse Benefit Boost equals half of his PIA, (FRA benefit), less her PIA. She would continue to receive her disability benefit as this benefit is not reduced for age. The spousal benefit will be reduced for age as she is under Full Retirement Age. Of course, the AET will apply if husband is under his FRA.
